As we shift into the new year, it’s important to review exactly what’s been accomplished in the previous 12 months by the Neepawa Town Council. Listed below are some of the most notable resolutions passed by council.

Dec. 2, 2014: Approved the development of an off-leash dog park project at Rotary Park, as supported by the Rotary Club of Neepawa. The Neepawa and Area Off-Leash Dog Park Association is working on the endeavour, but no physical development of the proposed location has been made so far.

Jan. 6, 2015: Council approved municipal planning to prepare a by-law to amend by-law #2650 for re-zoning 25 acres on former CN Lands/Industrial Park East. Several interested parties are exploring the purchase of land.

Feb. 17, 2015: Approved the purchase of a combo sewer/jet truck, at a cost of $85,000 plus taxes, less the $34,000 plus tax accumulated rent money paid against the purchase of the unit from Joe Johnson Equipment. The new machinery is now a part of the town’s fleet of equipment and is used for dislodging dirt and debris from clogged lines.

May 5, 2015:  Council came to a 50/50 cost sharing agreement with The Manitoba Water Services Board on an upgrade to the Hummerston Well Site, up to a value of $1 million. The improvements on the well is currently nearing completion.

July 7, 2015: Town Council advised administration to pursue a project focused on the placement of the lift station at the south end of the trunk, which will allow the sewer line for that south-west section of town to be phased in. Once constructed, it could immediately serve to divert flow from the existing business on Highway 16 and any new nearby housing or commercial developments.

Aug. 4, 2015: The purchase of a lawnmower for use at the cemetery from Enns Brothers at a cost of  $6,164.92 plus taxes, was approved by council. The lawnmower was bought and is in use by town workers.

Oct. 10, 2015: The Town of Neepawa received grant funding under the Small Communities portion of the New Building Canada in both 2014 and 2015 for the construction of a new trunk sewer valued at $3.5 million.

Oct. 20, 2015: The Town agreed to look at establishing new water and sewer rates for 2016 to 2018. During the same meeting, council also agreed to look at amending the zoning by-laws and regulation in order to include provisions for secondary suites.

Nov. 17, 2015: The Town of Neepawa accepted the proposal of Calnitsky Associates Architects Inc., at a cost of $76,500, to work with them on the design of a new fire hall. The 10,000-square-foot facility will be built on the northeast section of the former CN property, near Mill Street. Council hopes to begin construction before the end of 2016.

Dec. 1, 2015: The decision is made to start a comprehensive review of the town’s solid waste collection and recycling program.  The review will look at methods of collection, disposal, scheduling and the resources required to perform the work.
