Two dozen 50 Plus members and one guest met on March 23. Vice-president Hugh Depencier welcomed members and the meeting opened with singing of O Canada. It was agreed to send a $50 donation to Rolling River Festival of the Arts.
Members have attended several games competitions; chairman Wray Douglas presented a detailed report: on March 1 Rivers hosted a successful table shuffleboard tournament with 12 teams taking part; on March 22 Rivers hosted carpet bowling with seven teams of four players each taking part, two teams came from Sandy Lake and one from Rapid City; on March 24 five teams from Rivers planned to travel to Elkhorn to play euchre. A proposed date for hotshots is May 26, court whist is May 5 and shuffleboard in June has not yet been finalized.
Guest speaker was Chief Bruce Klassen of Rivers Police Service. His topic was Preying on Seniors; he discussed Internet/computer scams, reverse home mortgage schemes, door-to-door scams and other topics of which seniors are advised to be aware. He mentioned loneliness is often a problem for seniors and that one friendly phone call from a stranger can often lead you into a financial nightmare.
Several members were seated at the birthday table, which was decorated with a spring theme. The meeting closed with singing God Save the Queen. Our next meeting is April 27; please note change of date.
