Apple season is upon us and these tantalizingly fruits are delicious made into desserts, added to salads or just fresh.

Apple and date squares

1/2 cup softened butter

3/4 cup brown sugar

2 eggs

1 cup flour

1 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 tsp. cloves

1 large apple

1 cup chopped dates

Topping:

1/4 cup sugar

1/2 tsp. nutmeg

In a bowl mix the butter and sugar together. Beat in the eggs. In another bowl mix the flour, baking powder, soda, cinnamon and cloves. Stir to combine. Peel, core and chop the apple and mix the apple and dates into the batter. Pour into an 8x8 inch greased baking dish. Mix the topping and sprinkle on top. Bake at 350°or until toothpick comes out clean.

Slow cooker apple butter

8 cups peeled and diced apples

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 Tbsp. apple juice

2 Tbsp. lemon juice

2 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 tsp. cloves

1/2 tsp. allspice

In the slow cooker combine all the ingredients. Cover and cook on high for 2 hours. Using an immersion blender, purée. Turn the cooker down to low, leave lid off and cook for another 1-2 hours to thicken up the sauce. Put into jars or airtight containers and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks or freeze for later.
