Subject to change

You are reading an ad for what looks like a really good sale. You decide you will go and buy what they are advertising for such a good price. Then you get to the small print at the bottom of the page: “Prices subject to change without notice.” What? That’s not fair! They shouldn’t be able to just change it without even warning us!

Or you are looking over a schedule for a tournament in which one of your kids is playing. You think you’ve got everything planned until you get to the footnote at the bottom which says: “Times subject to change without notice.” Again, this violates our sense of fair play.

It’s not just the change itself, but the fact we don’t even get any notice. Life is like that though, isn’t it? Change happened whether we want it or not, and most of the time, we don’t get any warning.

A storm destroys a house or neighbourhood in minutes. You get word of a promotion that you’ve been hoping for, but it requires you to move across the country in the next two weeks. Your name comes up to move into a place where you will be safer and that will give your family peace of mind, but you only have 48 hours to decide.

Really, life is “subject to change without notice.” But God is not. God is constant and dependable. The only surprises God springs on us are the abundance of His grace and the extravagance of His love.
