The die is cast. Municipal and School board election candidate lists are now finalized and the election date is Oct. 26. But there are exceptions, as a large number of councils and boards only got enough candidates to fill the seats and not enough to trigger a contest. That tells a couple of stories or more.

Prince Charles is only one year younger than me. In our family, Quen Elizabeth II and her eldest son, Charles, have always been somewhat of a presence. I can’t remember ever singing ‘God save the King,’ even though Elizabeth’s father was still the King when I was very little. Elizabeth is the only monarch I have really known. I have great respect for her. Most years, we would listen to the Queen’s message and for the past several years, I have thought inwardly, or voiced the thought to my wife Christine that this might be her last message. Turns out, Christmas 2021 was her last and I am saddened by that.

Pierre Poilievre won the leadership contest in overwhelming fashion. He won 330 of the 338 seats across Canada. He won 70 per cent of the popular vote. His outstanding win shows that the Conservative party of Canada is very much ready for a change in how we do government.

I am moved to write about the fact that in five of my hospital stays over the last few years, I was very sick. Not to be overly dramatic, but left untreated in those five visits, I might not be here to write this column. I feel it’s important to share my thoughts on life and death.
