Readers may recall the June 16 edition of Rivers Banner contained a full page story about the grand opening of Rivers Wetland Centre of Excellence. Included in that ceremony was the presentation of an award of excellence from Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication (EECOM) which named Rivers Collegiate EECOM’s most outstanding school, kindergarten-Grade 12. What the school didn’t know at that time was that one of their teachers, Mr. Daniel Kiazyk, also received an EECOM individual award as the best environmental educator.
First fire in 40 years

The day was nearly over on June 23 and most volunteers with Rivers/Daly Fire Department were snug in their beds. A call at 11:50 p.m. disturbed that rest and the 14 men who were on call rose and raced to the fire hall to don necessary equipment and head out of town. After travelling two miles east, they turned north to reach the cottage at 23 Sioux Lane in Chimo Resort. It was already fully engulfed in flames; members worked to contained the spread to that lot only.

People gathered at Kenton Legion clubroom on Sunday, June 25 for a delicious chicken supper, catered by Houston's Family Restaurant. Dessert was a beautifully-decorated cake, purchased from Country Crocus Bakery in Hamiota, and served with ice cream.
Free admission for Rapid City Fair

Attendees at Rapid City’s 137th annual fair were surprised to find no toll booth to collect gate admissions on the road off the highway leading to the fairgrounds. Yet access to those grounds can be made from many points and those without livestock often come in from the “free” sides.
NACI drama receives donation

NACI’s drama program recently received a donation from Neepawa Banner and its advertisers. The $120.90 donation represented a portion of the proceeds from the Banner’s “Beauty and the Beast” spread, which ran in the April 28 edition of the paper.
