The Most Reverend Archbishop Richard Joseph Gagnon, the Seventh Archbishop of Winnipeg, visited St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church in Neepawa on Sun., Mar. 12, to perform a special blessing of the main sanctuary now that the church’s roof construction has been completed.

Rivers Auxiliary puts foundation grant to good use

Ladies Auxiliary First vIce-president
Rivers Ladies Auxiliary to Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 75 received its charter in May 1946 and last year celebrated 70 years of service in this community. Auxiliary members are committed to helping the local veterans, branch and community. They also provide both financial and service support to keep the legion building well maintained. Over those 70 years the auxiliary has financially supported Branch 75 in projects such as painting, roof repairs, air conditioning, washroom renovations, two new furnaces, tables, chairs, kitchen flooring, cooler repairs, a new bingo board and cenotaph maintenance. The latest project was the upgrading of cupboards and counters in the upstairs canteen area. This was made possible, in part, by a $1,500 grant received from Rivers & Area Community Foundation in 2016. The remainder of the cost was provided by the auxiliary, which raised monies through various activities that were well-supported by the community. This canteen was once used as a full kitchen but is now mainly used to dispense snacks and beverages during bingo, socials and other special events.

Old favourite books take their turn on the nightstand. Back again and loved as much as when I first read it is “My Grandfather’s Blessing”, stories of strength, refuge and belonging, by Rachel Naomi Remen. The stories are from her work, a counsellor for those with chronic and terminal illness, and from her life, the daughter of survivors of the Holocaust. She grew strength and faith from her grandfather, a scholar of the Kabbalah, the mystical teachings of Judaism. It is the type of book that each page provides an opportunity for introspection and growth.

Lisa Brokop is a name we have been hearing in Canadian music for several years. Her newest album, The Patsy Cline Project, was released in 2015. It includes seven Patsy Cline songs and three original songs and on March 25, Kaleidoscope Concert Series presents the Patsy Cline/Lisa Brokop concert at the Roxy!
