Manitoba’s premiere ski resort is offering another attraction for guests this winter. Asessippi Ski Area & Resort northwest of Russell has teamed up with Bluesky Expeditions of Churchill to offer an authentic dogsledding experience.

Former Rivers resident writes sixth book

Mike Czuboka moved to Rivers with his parents and two brothers when he was four years old. He was educated at Rivers School for Grades 1-11 and took Grade 12 at Brandon College (now Brandon University). In 1950 he enlisted in the army’s special force, a contingent that was being raised for the Korean War, where he served for a year. He left the army four years later when he pursued more education and ultimately, became a teacher himself (after he earned two bachelor degrees, which he later upgraded to master degrees). What started as a teaching position at Brandon’s Neelin High School turned into a principalship in the 1960s and ultimately, superintendent of Agassiz School Division (1969-90). He was also president of Manitoba Association of School Superintendents. He was a university history teacher and his students at University of Manitoba described him as “outstanding” in their written evaluations.

Members of Rivers Women’s Institute (WI) love a good discussion about relevant topics. The program at the Sept. 11 meeting took the form of an informal conference on the topic of food literacy. Information was shared about Brandon Community Gardens Network and the city’s Good Food Box program. After that, each member took her turn to offer suggestions for better eating, better cooking and better growing. Everyone had something to contribute, including ideas about how to use up small bits of leftovers. Members expressed the wish that all women would have an opportunity to learn how to cook healthy food from scratch. How can we make that happen?

Manitoba Habitat Heritage Corporation (MHHC), along with Rivers Police Service, are asking residents of Rivers (and area) to abide by signage and vehicle restrictions on privately-owned property or they run the risk of being charged with trespassing. The property in question is owned by MHHC and is situated in town limits on the east side of Rivers, south of Hwy. 25. The 135 acres of land was donated by the Wareham family in 1998 to MHHC.
