Last week, I wrote “I think that all levels, be it government, staff, medical professionals and volunteers, have done a a lot of great work to try and get our elderly people through the COVID-19 pandemic.” I still believe that to be true. I don’t think there is one human being anywhere in Manitoba that wakes up in the morning and says, “I am going to go out and do harm.” Everybody is trying very hard to do the best they know how to get us through the C-19 pandemic.

There are a number of people calling for a more complete shutdown of the Manitoba economy in an attempt to slow the C-19 pandemic. I have yet to hear from anyone who is calling for a shutdown who will actually lose their paycheque due to the shutdown.

Over the past month, things have really gone sideways on us here in Manitoba with regard to the COVID-19 numbers, especially in Winnipeg. When the city shifted into a restricted (Orange) level on Sept. 28, and should have seen the case numbers skewer downward, or at least hold steady. But that’s not what has happened. They have trended upward, at an alarming pace and now Winnipeg finds itself in code red.

It’s hard not to be discouraged. Every day, we are bombarded with news about sickness and deaths. COVID-19 has run a ragged course through our population, made all the worse by receiving a limited range of information.
