Catholics celebrate centennial

By Liliane Dupuis

In conjunction with the Archdiocese of Winnipeg’s centennial, the parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church in Rivers centred its annual spring tea around this theme. Decorations in the church basement reflected the centennial theme and colours; some ladies wore brightly-coloured T-shirts which they purchased after mass at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg. Smal votive candles received at the centennial celebration in Winnipeg decorated the tables, along with bright blue and yellow centerpieces. Our president opened the tea with a prayer before guests enjoyed the lunch.

Master Anglers at annual derby

By Hall Sveistrup

A total of 38 adult fishing enthusiasts and 11 children aged 12-and-under (who were admitted for free) converged on Jake Fast Park on Saturday, June 20 for the second annual summer fishing derby which was hosted by Rivers and Area Game and Fish Association on Lake Wahtopanah. The 49 competitive fishers hooked a total of 37 fish comprised of 16 walleye, 12 northern pike, three perch and six rock bass. A cash prize of $200 was awarded for the longest fish in each of the four categories; this is the summary of winners: walleye, Perry White, Brandon, 73.7 centimetres (large enough for a Master Angler Award); northern pike, Ian Straker, Minnedosa, 81 centimetres; perch, Trevor Johnston, Rivers, 22.3 centimetres; rock bass, Roger Beaudin, Rivers, 27.5 centimetres (also large enough for a Master Angler Award).

Collegiate competes for Canley Can

By Terry Radcliffe

As most activities go, this one started as a small idea and quickly morphed into a significant undertaking. It all began when Riley Shamray and Riley Lamb came up with the idea of putting on a floor hockey tournament for a noon hour activity. About the same time, Liliane Dupuis approached Rivers Collegiate Institute (RCI) with an idea to assist Riverdale Harvest with renewing their inventory. The Grade 7 social studies class turned both ideas into a hugely successful food drive, due to the terrific support of RCI staff and student body, parents and Little Italy of Brandon.
