View from the legislature - July 30

Another session of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly wrapped up on June 30, but not to the benefit of Manitobans. The session that started with the budget address on April 30 was the shortest spring session since the last election. The government chose to sit only 35 days compared to the longest session sitting 90 days in 2013.

As I sat in my office on Saturday July 25, 2015, it was a much different July Saturday than the past 8-10 years. For most of those years, I was chairman of the Neepawa Area Lily Festival and I was involved for all 18 festivals.

Influencing positive change

Don’t touch that! Mind your manners. Look both ways before you cross the street. Think about how many times you’ve had to repeat these instructions in order to influence habit-forming positive behaviour. Dozens, probably hundreds of times, in different situations and contexts, I suspect. With any luck, after a few years you start to see the results you were hoping for.

Homebodies - Today I chose to wonder

There are things in my daily life that could, and sometimes do, irritate me. Today, as I tackled the day, one chore at a time, I chose to wonder. The yard is looking presentable, the grass short enough for me to spot the mole hills.

My perspective - Don't get a job

Imagine if instead of telling kids to “Get a job!”, we said, “Start a business!”? Imagine how different our Main Streets would look? For a country that was built by small business owners, some of whom became large, we have become increasingly adverse to entrepreneurship.
