Bridge out near Rivers

Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation announced on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 1, the emergency closure of the PR 250 bridge over the Assiniboine River at Deerboine Colony in the Spring Valley district of Riverdale Municipality. The temporary closure is due to structural damage from an oversized load striking an overhead cross beam of the steel-truss bridge.

For the past number of years, still life photographer and online teacher Kim Klassen has been successfully building her business from a small studio in her home in Rivers. One year ago Kim realized the need for a larger studio space to build her business further and began looking for the perfect location. Kim and her husband John were drawn to Carol Hassard's former Carol’s Time Again Treasures shop at 211 Main and saw great potential. In February of this year, Carol handed over the keys of her former building to new owner, Kim Klassen.
Fundraising fever in Rivers

Readers may recall that two years ago Riverdale Community Daycare began the long process of fundraising and submitting applications for safety regulations, etc. Last October they announced three rooms in Rivers Collegiate will be renovated for 32 childcare placements, 24 preschool and eight infants. In May they reported some indoor and outdoor play equipment had been purchased and that their work with Manitoba Family Services Regulatory Board (adhering to a comprehensive list of rules and stipulations) continues. The committee co-ordinated two fundraisers in conjunction with Rivers fair on July 8 and they submitted an application to win a $25,000 Together We Thrive grant in August; Dauphin was the Manitoba winner. Their regulatory work and fundraising efforts continue with two more events confirmed for September and October.

Congratulations to Robin Routledge (formerly from Kenton) of Fort St. John, Alta. who was married on Saturday, Aug. 22. He is the son of Scott and Marcia Routledge; Gert Routledge (Hamiota) and the late Lyle Routledge and Lloyd and Betty Waterman are his grandparents.

School classes in Rivers will resume on Sept. 8 and Rivers Police Service would like to remind motorists to be on the look out for bicycles and pedestrians going to and coming from school. Young children may forget pedestrian rules, so keep a watchful eye on these small ones who may unexpectedly dart in front of traffic to cross the street. Cyclists will be prevalent, so drivers are again cautioned to anticipate sudden moves from those on bikes.
